ColorSynth

ColorSynth explores creating a relationship between color and sound through an app experience. It characterizes how colors make people feel through the colors they wear on a day to day basis and creates an auditory experience to encourage self reflection in someone’s morning routine. They then can move forward in their day with a song that describes their mood. Overtime, a user can grow a strong relationship with music, color, and their feelings.

This was a collaborative effort with Michael Kim & Se A Kim.

Initial Onboarding: Introduction

With first time use, the user will fill out what colors they wear often as well as complete an assessment on how different colors make them feel. This will help build the algorithm of what songs will align with what moods and colors.

Initial Onboarding: Color to Mood Algorithm

In onboarding, the user will answer questions to help define the type of sound correlated with specific colors. Does green make you want to dance? Does blue make you feel calm? Does black make you feel sad?

Referencing Spotify’s API, we created an algorithm that would connect how colors make you feel with the type of song that would be paired with your outfit and mood. For example, if you say green makes you feel happy, this would impact the valence of the song or if you say green makes you feel upbeat, that would impact the tempo of the song, so a song representing green might have a fast, happy, dance-able beat. This relationship between you and the algorithm would morph over time and hopefully continue to grow more accurate as you grow a relationship with ColorSynth.

Creating a Ritual!

This process can easily become a part of someone’s routine as they get ready for their day. Over time, they can begin to build a playlist representing each day and outfit as well as explore new music to correlate with their mood!

Adjustability

Maybe the Song isn’t Quite Right? No Problem! ColorSynth gives the user the ability to go back and adjust the danceability, energy, loud-ness, tempo, and valence of any color to find a better fitting song for the user’s day and mood and make the algorithm even better!

Everyday Log

Once filled out for the day, the song will be added to the everyday log. The user can then go revisit the songs and outfit colors saved.

Social

ColorSynth would also allow users to connect to their friends and allow them to check out their colors, mood, and song for the day!

To better integrate into the someone space, ColorSynth would connect to an interactive mirror that would showcase color visuals and play the chosen song for the day to enhance someone’s morning routine and connection their personal space. This idea would need future development in terms of the visuals and integration of the mirror. >

^ ColorSynth could extend beyond its own application and connect to other music streaming apps, adding another layer of fun to people’s exploration of music. They can create playlists based on their everyday log or collaborate with friends. There are endless possibilities.

Working Prototype

To let students and visitors interact with the ColorSynth concept, we created a rough working prototype that they could tap through, implement colors, receive a song, and play with.
