Eagles Reach for the Sky

“Eagles Reach for the Sky” is a mural in the Liberty Elementary recess court for kids, families, and the surrounding Shadyside neighborhood to enjoy. First inspired by the fact that less and less children are playing sports and being active, especially young girls, I wanted to create a court design to inspire children’s play.

I began this journey by building a relationship with Liberty Elementary with the goal for the design to reflect the students. Creating a drawing activity for the students allowed them to imagine, draw, and share with me their dream recess court. They submitted these drawings, helping inspire and lead my design process. I then observed recess to see how the kids play in their space. Referencing these drawings and observing their recess time, I prioritized creating a modular design to elevate joy, foster imagination, and inspire play, with the added benefit of making their recess space a little brighter and more colorful. Inspired by the scribbles and winding lines in many of the Liberty students’ drawings, different pathways full of different shapes allow Liberty students and neighborhood children to follow these painted paths, define their own games, and let them interact with their play space in a whole new way. After proposing three designs to the Liberty Elementary community, they voted on them, choosing the “Eagles Reach for the Sky” option. With the eagle as Liberty Elementary’s mascot, this design is perfect in reflecting the students’ potential and their limitless futures ahead of them!

Designing a mural is one thing, but being able to meet people, organize, plan, and actually make it happen made this whole experience unbelievably rewarding. This is a part of the design process that you are less exposed to in school so it was great to push myself to make sure the students and staff of Liberty Elementary felt they were a part of the process! There were so many great learning moments when I needed to pivot and adjust to things out of my hands. I’m very thankful to Brett and Dylan for being unbelievable guides who helped me the whole way in both designing and planning. I’m also grateful to all of my classmates who helped in all sorts of ways, including painting, and capturing drone footage. This whole project was a team effort, and everyone involved was so helpful and encouraging. This final CMU design project was an excellent conclusion to my four years at CMU as I was able to make a lasting impact on a community of people and leave a colorful mark on Pittsburgh.

I spent four weeks making designs and figuring out what would be possible for a group of college students to accomplish. Over this time, I was able to better understand the scale, amount of time, and paint needed to paint the mural, as well as the complexity of the design to ensure executing it well. Simple bold shapes with bright colors are beautiful and clean and would be more simple to lead a team of people to accomplish.
